Arcanists or mages are individuals who wield arcane magic, either through training as artificers, swordmages, or wizards, through innate ability as bards or sorcerers, or through the pacts with powerful beings as in the case of warlocks. The title originated with the Empire of Netheril, where it was synonymous with the more modern word "wizard."^[1] More commonly, today, it refers to any wielder of the arcane.
