The Assembly was used to hold a variety of gatherings, including civic, private, and religious events. In poor weather, it became an under-cover town square or marketplace, where vendors erected booths to sell food, drink, and various goods and trinkets. Occasionally, public bouts were hosted, and were the subject of discreet betting.
The hall was also a destination for folk seeking news, rumors, jobs, or to meet people. The interior walls were bedecked with help wanted advertisements and other notices.
