Forgotten Realms Wiki:Canon

From Forgotten Realms Wiki

(Redirected from Canon)
This page is an official policy on the Forgotten Realms Wiki. It has wide acceptance among editors and is considered a standard that all users should follow. When editing this page, please ensure that your revision reflects consensus. When in doubt, discuss first on the talk page.
  • Author comments on their works are to be considered canon, as should WotC-sponsored PnP adventures, internet articles and Web Enhancements.
  • Certain CRPGs should be discussed further when their articles have been written (none of those that I believe are eligible have been started yet).
  • No picking and choosing what is canon from a single source.
  • Apart from the CRPGs yet to be discussed, CRPGs are to be considered non-canon.

[edit] Description

Canon, according to Ed Greenwood, is any published source relating to the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting.[citation needed] This means that if it is for sale in paper form then it is official Realmslore.

Some authors disagree with this. Richard Baker for example, when asked about the Baldur's Gate series, claims that canon in the Forgotten Realms is whatever you make of it. You can choose whether a particular work is canon or not.

Most are more inclined to agree with Greenwood as he is the 'father' of the Forgotten Realms. In the case of the Baldur's Gate series, their popularity, coupled with a sourcebook and several Dragon Magazine articles means that in the eyes of many respected members of the Forgotten Realms community it, as it appears in the game, is almost as much canon as the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting.

Feel free to discuss articles marked as non-canon on their respective talk pages.

[edit] Video games

Most articles that are considered non-canon but worthy of inclusion on the wiki are those concerning elements of a particular video game set in the Forgotten Realms. There are a number of canon templates specifically for these games. Please see Category:Canon templates to find the appropriate template.

[edit] Other articles

If you are adamant that an article is non-canon but no reference is made to this on the article, please add the following at the top of the page:

{{Non-canon}}

If you only want to mark a specific section as non-canon, you can insert this at the top of the relevant section:

{{Non-canon section}}

Please do not add this template unless you are absolutely sure about the article being non-canon. In cases where you are not totally sure, or you want feedback from other users, please add to the article's talk page first.
