New Userboxes[]

Ok, this is not as important as many other things we can do, but I want to do some changes in some userboxes so as to clarify them and create some more.

  1. In many userboxes it says: "This character's player comes from...". Do you have problem in changing that with "This user comes from..." when it clearly indicates the user?
  2. I will keep the "character's player" only for FR specific userboxes, like deities (see Template:User_Waukeen) or FR places (see Template:User_Waterdeep)
  3. If anyone wants a specific one, he can contact me at anytime for me to make it.

Sounds good. — BadCatMan (talk) 09:21, August 7, 2013 (UTC)

Categories and other questions[]

I'm going to create some Userbox templates for FR Deities. While I do so, I think it will be wise and neat to create some sub-categories like Userbox Templates for Deities. The question here is whether you prefer the template with variants, like the new Template:User_Lolth, Template:User_Neverwinter_MMO or not.
Some pros are:

  • Variants provide a great deal of customization to anyone's need or will.
  • With little effort you can alternate any userbox text (withing the variants' limits) in your profile easily without going to the userbox template itself.
  • There is no such problem as the one mentioned above by me (different confusingly similar but not exactly the same meanings: Character's player, user, user's character).

Some cons are:

  • A new user might be confused (although theoretically this seems to be the case, I think he will get a clear understanding pretty quickly, even faster than before with the previous userboxes, but maybe that is my opinion. For sure, a good example like in Template:User_Lolth, will clear things up).
  • Every variant and what words that are ommited must be chosen by the template creator carefully, but I'm ready for that.

To my opinion, we should go for the userboxes with {{{variants}}} at least for the new userboxes. (I like the variants version so much, that I'm tempted to even change all previous userbox templates and right afterwards also change the variants in each user's page who uses that userbox to reflect what the userbox in his page first had shown..... But everything in its turn).
I would like to hear your thoughts on the matter please. —Jandor (talk) 21:53, September 2, 2015 (UTC)

Each Userbox should have default contents. This is easy to do. For Template:User_Lolth, just change
     This {{{1}}} {{{2}}} '''[[Lolth]]'''.

   to

     {{{1|This user}}} {{{2|likes}}} '''[[Lolth]]'''.
If they just call the template without any arguments, they get the default, but they can add their own twists:
{{User Lolth}} → "This user likes Lolth."
{{User Lolth|This user's character}} → "This user's character likes Lolth."
{{User Lolth||hates}} → "This user hates Lolth."
{{User Lolth|This user's character|worships}} → "This user's character worships Lolth."
{{User Lolth|This user's character|hunts down and kills followers of}} → "This user's character hunts down and kills followers of Lolth."
{{User Lolth|''"My children are hungry."''—}}"My children are hungry."Lolth."
and so on.
I don't see a burning need for a subcategory, but I don't really care if you want to create one. I would put one or more examples on the category page: Category:Userbox templates where people will see it when they are searching for Userboxes to add to their profile. —Moviesign (talk) 22:47, September 2, 2015 (UTC)
