Detect evil and good was a divination spell that detected outsiders of different types and other types of creatures within 30 feet (9 meters).
Effect
The caster could sense desecrated or consecrated ground as well as aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, or undead. The spell could not penetrate three feet of wood or dirt, one foot of stone, or one inch of steel or a thin sheet of lead.

Only verbal and somatic components were needed for the casting of this spell.[2]
