Forums: Helping Hand > New Page Header coming

Just a head's up, there is a new page header coming June 12, 2017 according to this blog post. In short, we will have 4 top-level tabs (like we have now), 7 items under each of those in a drop-down, and 10 links under each of those in a side menu for a total of 280 links.

We are currently using 26 links, so if anybody has wishes or ideas about what we should be presenting to our readers, here is the place and now is the time to do it. That said, research shows (according to Fandom) that a very small percentage of visitors use the navigation bar to get around, mostly first-timers.

For what it's worth, the only things I use on that header are "On the Wiki: Wiki Activity", "On the Wiki: Random page", and "Community: Forum". I use the logo to get back to the main page. I use my user icon next to the search bar to get to my user page. I use the "Contribute" button if uploading a file. I use the "Following", "History", and "What links here" links in my toolbar at the bottom of the page. I also rely on my own custom navbar a lot:

That's it for me, mostly. If I were to add new links to the new page header, I would include links to the requests and current clack suggestions.

Think of the nav bar as an introduction to the vastness of the Forgotten Realms. I was thinking we could have Geography → Faerûn → Northeast Faerûn/North Faerûn etc. and do the same for Zakhara. We could have links directly to the category system like Items → Food&Drink/Substances/Magic Items etc. The 10 sub-items makes a good division for certain things—we have 9 alignments, 9 compass points (8 plus Interior), 8 schools of magic, 5 to 7 editions, and so on. The last link could be "More..." for those lists that are bigger than 10 (like "other magic traditions" after the basic 8 schools). The new nav system may also support 4th and 5th level menus, but they are not recommended because they are hard to use on mobile devices. We shall see.

If nobody has any objections, I'd like to add some third-level items to our navigation menu. I made a few small changes but nothing major. Here is the new list for your view and comment. If no one objects, this will go live in a day or three.

Good work. Since I use Monobook, I don't even see these normally, but I tidied them a little in the past. It's good to see them get proper development.

It makes the sidebar on the Main Page rather redundant, as it also offers similar links to portals and such. But Wikia's page design means we need some form of sidebar, and it's still required in Monobook, at least not without radical redesign.

We'd probably need Video Games and Comics links and portals along Novels and Sourcebooks. But that's a matter for general development, not these page headers.

I was actually thinking of combining the Activity and Community main headings into one so that I could have a second main heading to put things like Comics, Cards, Video Games, etc. up there. That would be a major change and not done without approval and consensus. Other wikis take over the entire thing, which we could do since we have so much content, but I'm fine with the way it is. Speak up if you have other ideas.

As for the redundancy, I think that's okay because different people access the site in different ways.
