Forums: Helping Hand > New featured article
I thought it might be a good time to place a new featured article on the main page, seeing as how the Artemis Entreri article is neither an Editor's Pick nor highly voted on by users. Furthermore, it lacks proper sourcing so it's hardly the highest quality article. Of course, in order to make a new featured article will require an administrator (which I am not on this particular wiki), since the main page is locked down. One thing we might want to do is do what Wookieepedia and many other wikis have done, which is to create a featured article template, which can be periodically updated.

I'm open to ideas as to what the new article should be. A vote should probably be used, though perhaps we lack the critical mass to reach a meaningful result through such a vote. In that case, we could go for the most highly-rated article at the time (currently Nilshai). Another decision that should be made is how often the featured article is updated.
Thoughts?

We're not really enough active editors to make this really systematized (monthly votes, etc.), I think. Imho, we should just cycle the featured article whenever we get tired of the current one, or someone suggest an article they're really happy/impressed with that the rest of us can agree on.

As far as FA template, that's quick to make, currently the FA blurb consists only of limmited code, see here User:Zerak-Tul/FA, could quickly make something like that into a template and paste the template into the mainpage.

As far as candidates for FA, I'm always partial to Waterdeep, or I'm pretty happy with the Twisted Rune article, though it's not nearly as lengthy. Those were my 2 cents, for what they're worth :)

Artemis ended up on the front page because the Wikia guy who redesigned the front page felt like putting the article there. As for all that Editors choice / article ratings, I use the "basic" layout, so I don't see any of that to comment on :)

Last but not least, if you need admin stuff done, feel free to poke me and I'll help as I can :)

I thought that might be the case (that we wouldn't have enough active editors for a monthly vote). However, changing the featured article annually or biannually probably would be manageable. Good work on the template, it looks more or less like what I wast thinking of (I designed a similar template for Encyclopedia Hiigara).

As for article nominations, I'll second Waterdeep after a quick look over its content.

I like Waterdeep as well. Though I recommend that for the next FA we use another "personality" or a deity :-)

I'll slap Waterdeep on the main page then, and you lot can start pondering about the next FA, and post comments here:)

Rather than have a vote for the next featured article, which I agree is a process suited to a wiki with more active editors than we have available here, how about Zerak chooses the next editor who gets to pick the featured article. That editor chooses a new one, then chooses another person, who gets to pick, and so on. We can just keep track of this in the forum thread here. I'd like to see the front page feature rotated roughly monthly, although the exact timing is not important, I don't think.

Fw190a8's idea of choosing an editor, who then chooses the next editor, and so on sounds good to me.

Alright, Niirfa-sa, you're up next, since you brought up the topic :)

Yes, Niirfa-sa, whatcha going to pick, huh, huh? *smiles*

Sorry for the delay - my last impression was that we were doing one biannually (we can do it bimonthly though - I've noticed complaints about low FA updates). After taking a brief survey of the article database, and given previous suggestions about doing a character, I nominate Kelemvor. It's one of the more detailed character pages out there, with an in-depth biography, information on his worship, and all in all a good format. It should be the model for other character articles. Anyone want to second that?
Niirfa-sa 22:14, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
I'll second that!

Great! While we're waiting for others to possibly approve, disapprove, allow me to enter something else into the record. Most wikis have a way of keeping track of previous featured articles. I've recently uploaded an image that might fit the role and I was wondering if we wanted to use it. As is general for such things its fairly unobtrusive.
Niirfa-sa 06:02, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
Good idea, and nice image :). What is it's copyright status, btw?
SkyeNiTessine 20:37, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
I imagine that since the FR logo was released to the public (from which I constructed the image) it's more or less free use. I certainly release it for free use.
Niirfa-sa 22:45, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
Cool -- glad you're willing to release it as free use :). Sorry for any confusion: I wasn't questioning the legality just then. I'm just saying it should have a copyright tag on it. Something like "Template:PublicDomain-Self" if it's completely self-made (not quite in this case), or something like "Template:Copyrighted free use" if it's something you've derived from an image that WotC has completely waived all rights to.

We just need to be very careful about documenting the legality of the images we use on this wiki.

Btw, I didn't realize that WotC had released the FR logo as public domain. That would mean anyone could use it for their own products. Was that part of the OGL announcement, or something else? Link?

SkyeNiTessine 04:46, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
Ay! You appear to be correct. The logo's so prevalent that I figured they had. My mistake for not doing the research. That said, it's very low resolution (32 pixels wide) and we use the logo elsewhere in the wiki (such as our own logo). However, if there is a consensus that it is not appropriate I'll go ahead and use something use. Perhaps the 2e logo is available.
Niirfa-sa 09:24, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
I think we've waiting long enough for people to comment. I went ahead and updated the main page with a new feature article: Kelemvor
SkyeNiTessine 20:05, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Okay, since you're pretty active Skye, you should go ahead and choose next. Should we aim for a new FA next month or the month thereafter?
Niirfa-sa 21:38, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I just noticed there's a missing word in the featured article text. There should be the word 'in' between 'community' and 'the' in the first sentence.
