Leomund's secret chest was a conjuration spell that allowed the caster to hide a chest.[5][1]

To Zakharan mages, always reluctant to acknowledge ajami names and accomplishments, the spell was known simply as secret chest, and counted among the spells of the universal province.[10]

Effects[]

On casting Leomund's secret chest, the caster could put a chest on the Ethereal Plane, keeping it safe there for sixty days at maximum.[1] The spell failed one in four times when the content of the chest was a living creature. The caster could retrieve the chest at any point during the sixty days with an exertion of will.[5]

The spell did not work on ordinary chests. The chest needed to fulfill some requirements. Its dimensions needed to be about 3 ft (0.9 m) by 2 ft (0.6 m) by 2 ft. It had to be an expensive well-crafted thing of at least 5,000 gp.[1] If wooden, its material needed to be either ebony, rosewood, sandalwood, teak, or something similar and its metallic parts like nails had to be made of platinum. If metallic, its material needed to be bronze, copper, or silver with fittings of silver or electrum.[5]

When the aforementioned sixty days ran past, there was an ever-increasing chance that the chest became lost forever. Even a wish spell could not remedy such an occurrence. However, a mundane search had a chance of finding the chest.[5]

The chest could not be accessed from the phlogiston, but the spell still remained in effect for the duration.[11]

Components[]

The spell only required somatic and verbal components but also a focus in the form of small replica of the chest to be hidden away made of the same materials.[5][1]

History[]

In the month of Eleasis, of the Year of the Unstrung Harp, 1371 DR, the city of Ravens Bluff's Ministry of Art and Wizards Guild jointly declared it illegal to cast Leomund's secret chest within city limits due to a raging unnatural storm at the time called the Soulstorm. In addition to threatening arrest for those that broke this decree, it was declared that breaking this prohibition would result in a permanent expulsion from either organization.[12][note 1]

Notes[]

  1. The events of the Living City Ravens Bluff campaign took place on a timeline that advanced together with the real world's time. Even though all Living City adventures and issues of Ravens Bluff Trumpeter were dated with real-world dates, there were events that received a DR year. The Living City timeline can be derived from Myrkyssa Jelan's historic events of the late 14th century DR. Myrkyssa Jelan attacked Ravens Bluff in 1370 DR, according to The City of Ravens Bluff and Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting 3rd edition; these events are chronicled in an in-and-out of universe issues of Ravens Bluff Trumpeter. This places the real world year 1997 as 1370 DR, and in 1998 (1371 DR), Myrkyssa was at last arrested and tried and said to have been executed, only to reappear in 1372 DR in The City of Ravens novel. As the real world's months and the Calendar of Harptos are virtually identical, we can also date all events of the Living City Ravens Bluff as close as an in-universe month.
