Madeiron Sunderstone (pronounced: /ˈmɑːˈdɪərɒnn ˈsʌndɛrstɒnɛMah-DEER-onn SUN-der-stone[5]) was the bodyguard of Open Lord Piergeiron the Paladinson in Waterdeep around 1372 DR[1]-1377 DR[6]

Description[]

Madeiron was 8 ft (2.4 m) tall, built like a human fortress. He had long scruffy blond[7] hair, which hung on his head covering his face like that of a sheepdog.[6]

Personality[]

Madeiron was near fearless but not very smart.[1]

Possessions[]

Madeiron wielded a magical +3 battleaxe called Axe of Heavenly Fire. It radiated bright white continual light. That battleaxe was gifted to him by a High Priest of Tyr.[3]

When the giant of a man was on duty he wore a polished, blued full plate suit of armor, also known as "coat-of-plate."[3]

Another weapon Madeiron wielded was a 12 in (30 cm)-long iron bar. He often used it to control crowds when fighting a crowd of smaller foes.[3]

Relationships[]

Madeiron had three daughters: Iluandaera, Phelelle, and Naeoene, with the eldest of the three inheriting the mountainous man's physique and demeanor.[4] A duo of blonde twin boys who worked in the chapel of Ao in the Palace of Waterdeep circa 1371 DR were members of the extended Sunderstone clan.[2]

History[]

Madeiron hailed from Hartsvale, a small kingdom near the Silver Marches. There, he was a distant cousin of the queen and his lineage went back to Brun I, son of Hartkiller. Madeiron left his home for a life as an adventurer.

Finally, circa 1352 DR, he settled in Waterdeep, where he joined the City Guard. In time, he rose through the ranks to become the bodyguard and personal champion of Piergeiron.[1]

In 1371 DR[note 1], Madeiron was fulfilling his duty guarding Piergeiron during the Open Lord's wedding ceremony with Eidola of Neverwinter. They uncovered a malicious assassination plot by the members of Master Mariners' Guild, stopped a group of doppelgangers that posed as Eidola's chambermaids, but failed to stop her abduction.[8]

Several years later, in 1378 DR, Madeiron Sunderstone was killed in an assassination attempt on Open Lord of Waterdeep, Piergeiron the Paladinson.[9]

Notes[]

  1. The Abduction, p.6 states that the wedding of Piergeiron the Paladinson and Eidola took place in the Year of the Haunting, 1377 DR. However, that date is implausible. Khelben Arunsun died in 1374 DR as depicted in Blackstaff (novel). Furthermore, Aleena Paladinstar was stated to be gone from Waterdeep by 1372 DR, planeswalking (City of Splendors: Waterdeep). On the other hand, the events of the Descent to Undermountain took place in 1370 DR, during which Aleena was actively banned from adventuring and any danger by her father. In the events of The Paladins, as well as the finale of the DDTS, Aleena took a central role, no longer bound by her father's rules. She later, with all the experience she received from battling the Unseen and hordes of Tanar'ri, felt confident enough to use her magic to traverse the planes. This places DDTS events likely in 1371 DR. This also does not conflict with appearances by Artemis Entreri, and the Neshers.
