A necromancer was a specialist wizard of the school of necromancy. They harnessed the energy that brought life to everything, draining it from their opponents and using it to wield powerful magic.[3][4][5]
Relationships[]
Necromancers were often viewed as ominous or nefarious by the general population, as their work dealt with death. However, not all necromancers were morally corrupt, but their manipulation of death-related energies was often frowned upon by various cultures.[4]
Necrobanes loathed necromancers, even if of the same alignment. Most interactions between them resulted in conflict.[7]
Other classes of magic, including enchanters and illusionists whose spells typically could not affect the undead, did not get on well with necromancers.[8]
Symbology[]
In the southern wizard nation of Halruaa, necromancy was not considered a honorable school of magic and considered to be one of the weaker disciplines. The symbol of necromancy was a raven perched upon the point of a triangle, which symbolized death and renewal found in death.[9]
Notable Necromancers[]
- Ambuchar Devayam, an undead Emperor of Shou Lung in Kara-Tur.[10]
- Marune, a neutral evil necromancer and the oldest living member of the Shadow Thieves. [11]
- Aumvor the Undying, an ancient Netherese lich archmage with a mastery of necromancy. [12]
- Kazerabet, also known as the Angel of the Dark, was a powerful necromancer who penned the Art of Necromancy.[13][14]
- Sammaster, powerful human necromancer and later lich, he was the founder of the Cult of the Dragon.[15][16]
- Shoon VII, the seventh emperor of the Shoon Imperium[17], who later turned into a Demilich.[18]
- Szass Tam, the Zulkir of Necromancy in Thay. [19][20]
- Velsharoon, also known as The Lich-Lord[21], he was an archmage of Necromancy and the patron of liches.[22]
