Can someone help me categorize this weapon? It is not listed in the 2nd Ed. or 3.5 Ed. Player's Handbooks and I'm not sure if it should be treated the same as a long sword or a bastard sword. The text in the article seems to indicate that it's more like a bastard sword, but I'd like to have a PHB reference to back that up. Moviesign 15:06, October 8, 2011 (UTC)

Reading the wikipedia article, a broadsword is clearly not a two-handed weapon. The examples given are all one-handed with a basket hilt, which leaves no room for anything but one hand on the hilt. Does anyone have the reference given in the article? It sounds like the reference is wrong or the definition of broadsword was changed for D&D. Does broadsword appear in any other D&D sourcebook? Okay, I'm going to rewrite the broadsword article to reflect real broadswords based on wikipedia. For all intents and purposes, broadswords are synonymous with longswords in D&D. We can keep the broadsword category just in case this ever changes. Moviesign 01:43, October 17, 2011 (UTC)

Movie, Broadswords existed in 1st and 2nd edition Dungeons & Dragons... have you checked the Player's Handbook 2nd edition, I know it is in there... they disappear in 3rd and 3.5 and I have no idea about 4th edition, but I bet they are gone... they were like a 2d4 dmg longsword, but weaker at large creatures (1d6+1 dmg)... in the 2nd edition Arms & Equipment sourcebook, they had basket hilts... if you want actual information, I will hunt down my PHB :) Darkwynters 04:41, October 17, 2011 (UTC)Darkwynters
According to a notepad file I made a year ago, broadswords are categorized (in 4th edition) as one-handed military melee weapons. I didn't add sources to my list, but it's either in the Dungeon Master's Guide or one of the Martial Power books, I'm sure. Cronje (talkcontribs) 06:59, October 17, 2011 (UTC)
I just looked again and broadswords are definitely not in 2nd ed. PHB or DMG that I can find. I did find broadsword in the 1st ed. PHB and it has the stats you listed. They list it as having the same length and speed factor as the longsword, but in the "space required" column the broadsword requires one more foot of space. Go figure. :P I don't have the 2nd ed. Arms & Equipment book. I'm going to leave the article the way it is. If 4th ed. has something that distinguishes broadswords from longswords, please add it. Thanks!
