A rare variety of malacon can exhibit tenebrescence or reversible photochromism, that is, the ability to change color when exposed to sunlight. The photo in the main article shows a high quality malacon gem before and after exposure to light. However, in the case of malacon (zircon) the stone loses its beautiful orange hue after a few minutes exposure to any light source. Placing the stone in darkness for several days, the color will again become bright orange. Low heat from a candle flame will also bring out the color which will fade back to brown as the stone cools. If malacon is found in loot or treasure, the more valuable variation can be considered tenebrescent and treated as a fancy stone or perhaps even a precious stone.
