Talk:Sun elf

From Forgotten Realms Wiki

Alignment lawful? Hmm... the patron god of sun elves by default is corellon, who is Chaotic Good. I believe this needs to be corrected.

I wasn't the one who initially wrote them as such but after looking at RoF... the description is pretty clear. Tradition-bound, patient, deliberate, haughty, dutiful... these are all lawful qualities. Granted, they're also supposed to have more clerics than other Tel-quessir, which clearly runs against the Seldarine being chaotic. My guess is that the culture is lawful bent, but falls somewhere in the middle, between law and chaos - with the religious picking up the chaotic side the rest of the culture is clearly slacking at.
It's sort of like the drow... who are clearly very lawful about their practices in many cases and yet who worship a chaotic evil goddess. The lore doesn't always seem to match unfortunately.Niirfa-sa 08:53, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
My own feeling on this is that we should follow what is "canon", not what we feel actually matches the description of any specific alignment. Disputes over alignment, especially in 2e-3e, are extremely common and people tend to have very strong views. Nothing fruitful will come out of us trying to figure out if drow should be chaotic or lawful, for example. We should just follow what is listed in the PHB or MM, as appropriate.
In this case, I think it's kind of moot. The alignment grid has already been removed from this article by someone, and that's probably the easiest way to deal with this, especially as you can make an argument that over the years the "canon" alignment of elves has changed.  SkyeNiTessine (talk · contr) 20:58, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
That's not a bad suggestion. Personally, I think it's easy to surmise what the alignment should be given that actual sourcebooks have been written about alignment's definition (down to lining up exactly what law/chaos and good/evil means) but we should probably avoid it in this case given the contradictory nature of the source material here. Maybe I'll bring it up in the Ask the Developers thread. Niirfa-sa 21:42, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
