If the template doesn't apply to the entire article, you can supply a parameter describing to which part of the article it applies. Usually this will be "section," for example:

You can supply an optional parameter when you first put this template on a page in order to show how long it has been tagged as unreferenced. Use the five tildes (~~~~~) to put the current date into the template as its second parameter:

Combining both of these:
