Tree steed was an alteration/enchantment spell that changed a piece of wood into a walking (I won't say lumbering) beast of burden.[1]


Any kind of wood could be used for a tree steed as long as it was at least 3 in (7.6 cm) thick, 1 ft (30 cm) wide, and between 3 and 10 ft (0.91 and 3 m) long. Upon casting this spell, the log or plank grew four wooden, horse-like legs and could be ridden or used to carry gear and equipment. The maximum load the tree steed could carry was 600 lb (272 kg) before breaking. The tree steed would obey simple movement commands (forward, stop, speed up, slow down, turn, etc.) and could move at a normal human walking pace on land or paddle on water at half that rate. The caster had to stay within 10 yd (9.1 m) of the steed or it would stop and wait for the caster to come back within range.[1]

The tree steed remained animated for one hour per experience level of the caster. If the steed broke for any reason, the enchantment ended. It would not fight or do anything other than follow movement commands within its limitations. Since it was made out of wood, it had all the properties and vulnerabilities of normal wood.[1]


In addition to verbal and somatic components, this spell required a log or plank within the specified dimensions and a horseshoe.[1]
