Whales were the largest mammals in the world. They were gentle sea-dwelling creatures that migrate from place to place in the oceans. While peaceful, whales are known to only attack ships and other sea creatures when provoked.[citation needed]
Baleen whales: were the larger of the type, including blue whales, humpback whales, and gray whales. These whales feed by straining seawater through long strips of baleen that they had in place of teeth, from which they got their name.[citation needed]
Cachalot whales: included such breeds as sperm whales, beluga whales, and narwhal. They were active hunters, feeding on fish, squid, and smaller marine mammals.[citation needed]
