Yharaskrik is an illithid who came to Calimport to study the artifact Charon's claw[1]. The creature lived in the deep tunnels below Kohrin Soulez's throne room in Dallabad Oasis after pretending to be defeated by Kohrin Soulez.

Appearance

Yharaskrik appears as a humanoid creature with a truly horrible appearance. The creature has a bulbous head that resembles a huge brain, with several tentacles protruding from the part of his face where a nose, mouth, and chin should have been. Like other illithids, the creature is a powerful psionic energy user easily defeating any enemy with stunning blasts of mental energies[2]. The illithid has a bubbling, watery voice that is described by Artemis Entreri as a sound made by a very old man with too much phlegm in his throat[3].

Yharaskrik and Bregan D'aerthe

After Jarlaxle and Bregan D'aerthe successfully attack Dallabad Oasis, Yharaskrik allies himself with Kimmuriel[4]. The creature teaches Kimmuriel how to prevent Crenshinibon from controlling him, thereby making Kimmuriel an ally of necessity[5].

Yharaskrik provides Kimmuriel with a small square lantern which has one open side and the other three sides shielded. When candle of the lantern is lit, the glow of the lantern (a Tower of Iron Will's sphere of influence[6]) over Crenshinibon will temporarily diminish the shard's power[7]. The lantern is used in the Bregan D'aerthe coup by its lieutenants (Rai-guy, Kimmuriel Oblodra and Berg'inyon Baenre) against their leader, Jarlaxle [8].

Death

Yharaskrik uses Rai-guy, then current leader of Bregan D'aerthe to locate Crenshinibon after Artemis Entreri escapes the Bregan D'aerthe coup by its Lieutenants with Crenshinibon and Jarlaxle[9]. Later, in the tunnels close to Hephaestus's chamber, Yharaskrik attacks Rai-guy so that Crenshinibon can be destroyed by bringing it before Hephaestus. But the illithid is defeated by Rai-guy[10]. Yharaskrik then surrenders to Rai-guy, but is supposedly killed (when the creature tries to escape by melting into the stone) along with Rai-guy (and destruction of Crenshinibon) by the fiery breath of Hephaestus[11].

The Ghost King

When the Spellplague begins Yharaskrik is able to come back from death and become some kind of mindforce without body. He lures Hephaestus into smashing the remains of Crenshinibon in his forehead. The dragon becomes a dracolich and with Crenshinibon and Yharaskrik the three become the entity known as the Ghost King. The mind of the dragon and that of Yharaskrik unite to some degree.

While scouting Yharaskrik finds and possesses the dwarf Ivan Bouldershoulder, then he takes him to the cave where the dracolich has moved. He does that in order to have his own place to reside and hide his thoughts from the conscience of Hephaestus and the Crystal Shard. After some time Ivan begins to recover and the illithid decides to let him go and see him die facing the dracolich. The dwarf however survives and escapes thanks to a slide-like tunnel. Yharaskrik tries to possess him again, but to no avail.

Driven by vengeance the consciousness of Crenshinibon and Hephaestus become a single being. Yharaskrik is expelled from the triumvirate as the new mind formed in the Ghost King doesn't pay ears to logic and is too powerful for the illithid to submit. With no place to go Yharaskrik thinks that he's about to fade, but then remembers a certain psionic, Kimmuriel Oblodra, that could possibly help him.

Finding the drow in Luskan the illithid, out of desesperation, makes a deal with him. Yharaskrik gives all the information he knows about the Ghost King and in return Kimmuriel opens him a dimensional door to the Astral Plane. Yharaskrik then leaves to the only place where he can exist without having to worry about physical limitations.
